Year 4 – Home Learning Week Commencing 18th May
Szia ismét,
Imádtuk olvasni a múlt héten megjegyzéseit. Nézze meg, ki tudja-e deríteni, milyen nyelvet használtunk ezen a héten.
We are very proud of everyone who is completing some work each week and impressed by the reading you are all completing. Remember we do not need you to print anything for our activities and to complete as many as you can. We would also love to hear about any extra projects you have been completing.
Scholastic Reading and TT Rockstars
We have assigned a new book for you to read this week linked to one of our Science topics this year (Electricity). Once you have completed the book, there is a quiz for you to complete. Scholastic Reading Handout for Parents
Congratulations to Year 5 who won the TT Rockstars battle last week. For TT Rockstars this week, we are battling Year 3. We would love as many of you as possible to log on and play so that we beat Year 3!
Maths Activity Ideas
We hope you have been enjoying the activities so far. We have 5 more for you to try again this week.
Task 1: Complete a shape hunt in your house. Make a list of any 2D and 3D shapes that you find. Make sure you also write down what the object was (e.g. tin of beans = cylinder). We found this picture in one of our houses containing many different shapes. You could add these shapes to your lists.
Task 2: Create your own shape artwork like the picture above. Try to include as many shapes as you can. You could complete on a piece of paper or try to use your computer and make a picture using Paint. Ask someone in your house if they can spot all of the shapes you have included in your artwork.
Task 3: Make something for teaching younger children about shapes (including their names and their properties). Be imaginative with how you present your work. It could be a poster, information booklet, picture book or even a song. You must make it clear what is special about each shape. Try to include the following shapes:
circle triangle trapezium kite rectangle rhombus paralleogram
Bonus shapes:
pentagon hexagon heptagon octagon nonagon decagon
Task 4: See if you can calculate the perimeter of your bedroom. Ask a grown up or older sibling if there is a tape measure you could use to measure the length and width of your room. If you do not have a tape measure, you could measure your room in footsteps. You must carefully put one foot in front of the other and count how many it takes for the perimeter of your bedroom. You could compare the perimeter of your bedroom to other rooms in the house. Which room has the largest perimeter? Which room has the smallest perimeter?
Task 5: Look at the temperatures in the weather forecast for Northampton for this week. For each day, calculate the difference between the temperatures shown. Which day has the largest temperature difference? Which day will be the coldest? Which day will be the warmest? See if you can find the weather forecast for another country and compare the temperatures to the ones predicted for Northampton.
English Activity Ideas
We have some more activities for you to try linked to our book for this term. If you have not had the chance to read it yet, try to log on to your Scholastic account this week. Scholastic Reading Handout for Parents
Task 1: Draw a picture of the village in spring. Label the picture with words and phrases from the extract above. You could write your own setting description for the village in spring by extending the first paragraph shown in the extract above. You could use this video to help you.
Task 2: Read through the extract and make a list of the prepositions you find. If you would like to, you could read the book again (or another of your favourite books) and make a list of all the prepositions you find. You could create a tally chart to see which preposition appears the most in the book.
Task 3: Continue this extract imagining what it looks like in the Giant’s garden. His garden is stuck in winter. Think about how it would be different in the season of winter. What would the temperature be? Would there be birds? Would there be leaves on the trees? Remember you can continue reading in the book to help you writing your paragraph.
Task 4: Write a poem linked to one of the four seasons. You could write about the season or think about one part of it (e.g. the weather). Challenge yourself to write your poem in the shape of something from the season like the ones in the pictures below.
Task 5: Create your own version of The Secret Giant but write it as a script for a performance. We suggest that you choose your favourite part of the book to focus on. If you would like to challenge yourself, imagine a film director has asked you to create a script for the whole book to be used as a new movie.
Topic Activity Ideas
This week we would like you to think about our rainforest topic from earlier this year. We would love you to be creative with this topic and research something you have always wanted to find more about. You could research your favourite rainforest animals, different plants from the rainforest or even make a list of names and locations of rainforests around the world. We would love you to spend time creating a project based around the area of the rainforest that interests you the most. Try to include a picture of the different layers of the rainforest. If your project were about a plant or an animal, in which layer would you find them?
Extra resources
Hi miss moloney,
I found some facts about my favourite animal in the rainforest:
The scarlet macaw is a large red, yellow, and blue Central and South American parrot, a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots called macaws. It is native to humid evergreen forests of tropical Central and South America. The Scarlet Macaw is native to humid evergreen forests in the American tropics, from Central America and South America, including eastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Amazonian Peru and Brazil. The Scarlet Macaw is native to humid evergreen forests in the American tropics, from Central America and South America, including eastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Amazonian Peru and Brazil. Before the Scarlet Macaws decline in population, its distribution included much of Costa Rica. However, by the 1960s Scarlet Macaws had been decreasing in numbers due to a combination of factors, particularly hunting, poaching and the destruction of habitat through deforestation. Further, the spraying of pesticides by companies cultivating and selling bananas for export played a significant role in decreasing Scarlet Macaw populations.
As pets, Scarlet Macaws are popular cage birds for those who can pay both the high price of the bird and the price of the big cage required. You should beable to tolerate their loud calls and can give them considerable time outside their cages. They are considered sociable and affectionate and some talk quite well.As pets, Scarlet Macaws are popular cage birds for those who can pay both the high price of the bird and the price of the big cage required. Hi Shaymaa,
These are great facts, well done! Why is the Scarlet Macaw your favourite? Do you think you would like to have one as a pet?
Miss Moloney
Hi miss moloney a poem for all four seasons
spring is green,
summer is bright,
autumn is yellow,
winter is white.
Oh I like it, well done!
Maybe you could try writing a slightly longer poem and using lots of describing words to tell us what each season looks like, feels like, smells like, sounds like?
Keep up the good work!

Hi miss moloney ,
My favorite rainforest animal is a scarlet macaw because they look beautiful and they can talk to me.if i was to have a desicition i would choose it as my pet
HI miss moloney ,
i looked for another poem :
spring only comes once a year
the birds sing loudly for all to hear
Summer soon will arrive
the sun shines down and lovely flowers thrive
Autumn brings the changing of leaves
Beautiful colours falling from the trees
winter blows in with cold winds abound
snow piling up on the frozen ground
A lovely poem Shaymaa! I’m really please to see that you are working hard!

It is 🙂
Hi mrs carsberg it cobey can you put more science beceause science is my favriote subject
Hi Cobey.
The next home learning pack will go out at the end of next week. I will remember more science work for then. I am in tomorrow for mini school so I’ll see you then.
Mrs. Carsberg
spring is here. The fields are rich with daffodils. The leaves are yellow, red and brown
do you like it dear? A coat of clover cloaks the hills A shower sprinkles slowly down
And I must dance and I must sing. The air is fragrant crisp and cool
summer is hot. To see the beauty of the spring. And once again I’m stuck in school
I need a drink a lot.
The earth is warm, the sun’s ablaze The birds are gone, the world is white
autumn is colourful. It is a time of carefree days. The winds are wild they chill and bite
and very wonderful. And bees abuzz a chance to pass. The ground is thick, slush and sleet
May see me snoozing in the grass. And I can barely feel my feet
winter is white.
but not very bright.
The poems didn’t go how they were supposed to go. They are all mixed up
Try sending them through again as an individual comment for each separate poem 🙂
Miss Tew
Hi Miss Tew
I’ve measured my room and will be measuring more tomorrow. I have read the electricity book and others to keep my knowledge up. Me and Dad enter a quiz with our friends plus even more maths than you would think. 🙂
Hello Ellis 😀
It is lovely to hear from you. I hope you and your family are OK 🙂 I can’t wait to hear about the biggest room you find. Were you surprised by the perimeter of your bedroom? I have been looking at all the books you have been reading. Scott of the Antarctic looked interesting, I hope you enjoyed it. The quizzes sound like great fun. Fantastic job also squeezing in lots of Maths work as well.
Keep smiling and keep safe
Miss Tew
Hi Miss Tew, we are all OK 😉 and safe thank you – I hope that you are too. I’ve measured all the upstairs rooms and unsurprisingly Mum + Dads room is the biggest. The smallest is the Bathroom. Also doing tasks, on the Xbox – I meet up with Wyatt and play with him (I MISS MY TWIN 🙁 ) I’ve earnt a new game by doing extra maths. I’m going to do the drawing one with my Dad when he is off. (He is a key worker 🙂 ) I will write to you again.
That’s great news 🙂
Super measuring work. I am pleased you can still keep in touch with Wyatt. I miss you all but glad to hear from some of you on here. I hope you enjoy playing your new game. If you would like to, your mum or dad can send a picture of the finished drawing as a private message on the school Facebook page for me to have a look at 😀
Miss Tew
oooooh secret
hello miss Tew,
I have done lots of work this week from the blog, I made a poem in the shape of an ice cream and also this is my extract following on from the extract from the selfish giant….
the tree’s sat bare of leaves with icicles from where the leaves once were. The sound of birds were taken over by the whistling sounds of the wind through the cold crisp air, and snow falling from the branches with a plop on the floor! winter had taken over the giants garden and it was very cold and grey.
I also worked out the sentence you had sent which was in Hungarian….
We loved reading last week’s comments. See if you can find out what language we used this week.
I am going to be doing the perimeter of my bedroom today and finish off my temperature work today too. hope you all have a good half term, miss you all
Wyatt
Hello Wyatt,
It looks like you have been working very hard. I love ice cream 😀 What a great idea for a poem!
Fantastic writing, I really like your use of the different senses. I could hear all the sounds while I was reading your sentences and feel the cold of winter.
We did write in Hungarian, great translating. Well done for also completing some Maths work. You have been very busy.
I miss you all as well and hope you and your family enjoy your half term 🙂
Miss Tew
Hi Miss Tew
I’m doing the spring scene tomorrow and I can’t wait to show you
Ellis
Sounds great 😎 I look forward to seeing it.
